Silvershields

It's been a while! A combinations of things lead to having a bit of a break from both ancients and generally keeping up with things online. I was pleased to get these 48 Newline Designs 20mm Silvershields refreshed and rebased but it was quite a task. The main challenge was painting the shield designs which took a lot of focus to finish, and with giving the pikes a proper tip along with the actual rebase it was a bit of a grueller. So then when I began the Bronzeshields, which are twice the number of Silvershields, I attempted to go in with the same determination to get finished. That was June and I'm still intermittently working on them!

In an attempt to rekindle interest in the hobby I looked to other projects. This mainly took the form of building plastic sci-fi soldiers for a Warhammer 40k setting. However I'm often put off by the list building, ever changing rules updates and general complication and special rules for the sake of it. All that in itself can make that project daunting but I picked up a copy of Xenos Rampant and that has helped focus the project. The simplicity of the army building and the general philosophy of them really helped to give me a reasonable sized army list to build towards.

In general I have not been able to focus with painting as I have also been trying to make a start on Moria goblins. Bit by bit I have been working on these various projects, but none yet have reached completion since these Silvershields. Even getting to the point of writing this post has been difficult even though the pictures were uploaded back in June. Hopefully by chipping away at what I fancy when I can I will hopefully get something finished at some point soon. In the meantime I hope you enjoy the pictures of these Seleucid Silvershields:

  1. Well from my naked eye I assumed you had used perfectly fitting transfers on those silver shields! Very compelling.

    1. Thank you that's kind of you to say... Up close it's another story 🤣 overall happy with them being a massed unit.

  2. Hi Tony! I try to write this comment for the seventh time... don't know why it has become so difficult, so sorry for the lack of comments on the other posts. Nice to see you back in the hobby, and very happy to have a look at those marvelous Silvershields (Argyraspides in ancient greek)! I understand that you sometimes need a break, even from a hobby. And it may last for years :) I would be curious to see your SciFi figures (something I don't paint myself, except for a few StarWars figs), but your Moria goblins are of the highest interest! Some pictures soon ?

    1. Hello Phil thank you for your comments! Sorry you've had difficulty with posting them it's happened to me a few times. Sorry I haven't kept up with your blog but I'll head over soon as you always have stunning work! I realised checking the comments tab that one of my own comments ended up in Spam! These old blogs are glitchy to say the least!

Ah yes I will post some eventually it's Les Grognards from Wargames Atlantic which are at various stages of completion. The Goblins are the Games Workshop ones and so far undercoat and some have had a metal drybrush so a long way to go with them.

  3. The unit looks really good from the painting point of view and unit size which make them look very imposing..

  5. They look magnificent. I must admit I find phalangites a real struggle to paint. Something to do with the fiddliness of assembly, their unrelentingly uniform nature, and the daunting numbers you need to churn out before you can get an army on the table! But the reward is great - when they are done they become the pride of the collection.

    Keep on keeping on!

    Cheers,
    Aaron

    1. Cheers Aaron I totally agree. It's been an uphill battle to just get my Seleucid pike highlighted, shields repainted and rebased up. I've just photographed the Bronze shields and I'm chuffed to call them done!
